Department Stores

A department store has separate, different sections or “departments” each carrying specific products such as women’s clothing, home appliances, and hardware, among many other sections. The first department store can be traced back to 1838 when Aristide Boucicaut built the Bon Marche store in Paris. This paved the way for the evolution of simple stores into becoming department stores where an assortment of goods were sold under one roof however at a fixed price.

After 10 years, Alexander Turney Stewart built the Marble Palace in New York City which sold European merchandise to women. Other merchants followed suit and came up with different ways to attract customers. This was when discount department stores came to be. With 6% less for cash policies (Macy’s) and five cent counters (Woolworth), most of these department stores offered discounts on in-demand items. They later branched out to retail chains of department stores.

Thousands of Customers Daily

Department stores are retail stores that carry clothes, furniture, appliances, toys, cosmetics and jewelry, among many others. Nowadays, department stores cater to thousands of customers daily. Whether they go in just to browse or really buy something, department stores always welcome the crowd. Three of the most popular and biggest department stores in the United States are Macy’s, Hudson’s and Marshall Field. They have even branched out into shopping malls and retail outlets all over America.

Some department stores are categorized further into discount department stores. These stores usually carry items that have lower price tags compared to high end department stores. However, discount department stores do not sell name brands in general. They carry cosmetics, accessories, small household appliances, toys, electronics, household necessities and food, among many others.

Retail Chain Department Stores

Today’s most successful department stores have retail chain stores which carry a single brand and are usually centrally managed. The retail chain department stores can be limited to areas within a country or can be found worldwide. The biggest retail chain in the world is, of course, Wal-Mart which has branches all over the world.

Department stores have become a fixture in most malls since it caters to the daily needs and wants of the public. It’s a one-stop-shop for anyone who has limited time to browse and go to different stores. There will always be a department store for everyone. Whether you prefer name brand department stores or discount department stores, you’ll usually find one in your city especially if they are popular enough to have retail chain department stores everywhere.
