Bookstores from Prophets to Publishers - Bookstores

Corner Bookstore

Bookstores or bookshops can carry both a large variety of titles or specialize in one subject matter such as Science Fiction, Music, or Alternative. Bookselling began with scribes during the time of the prophet Jeremiah. The scribes usually provided books on demand and were handwritten. As early as 300 BC, Greeks and Romans engaged in bookselling because of the popularity of having libraries in each household. However, bookstores didn’t really flourish until printing was introduced in late 14th century. Wholesaling of books started out in early 19th century through their publishers. With the Internet came an opportunity to sell more books by the thousands through online stores.

From publishing to selling

Bookstores nowadays are either part of a chain of stores (like Barnes & Noble or Borders) or are smaller, independent shops. They vary in sizes from small shops with a limited collection of books to whole buildings offering several thousands of book titles. They are not limited to selling books as well but also offer other printed materials such as maps, newspapers, stationary and other media like music CDs and DVD movies. Certain book collectors, on the other hand, may prefer used bookstores or second-hand bookshops for cheap, used, rare, or out-of-print books.

Some bookstores also sell wholesale. However, the usual process involves three parts, including the publisher, the wholesaler and the retailer. Since bookselling flourished during the time of King James in the 16th century, the distinction among these parts was established for convenience and control of the release and subscription of titles. The biggest chain of bookstores in the USA that sell wholesale and retail are Barnes & Noble and Borders while the United Kingdom has Blackwell’s and Waterstone’s, to name a few.

The evolution of the bookstores

Today, book shopping has become more convenient with the rise of the Internet and e-commerce. Amazon.com has become the biggest online store with the largest selection of books in the entire online universe. Next to Amazon are Borders.com, Barnes & Noble online, and WHSmith in the UK. Aside from these chains of stores, independent shops in different countries worldwide might have better chances of selling books online by carrying specialized selections.

As you can see, you can find books and so much more at your local bookstore. Whether you are shopping at popular wholesale/retail chains like Borders and Barnes & Noble, independent shops specializing in once niche like Science Fiction, or online, you can access a variety of titles and topics conveniently. The next step in the evolution of bookstores is downloadable books which are already a reality.
