Food markets are business establishments that offer raw and cooked edible products for daily human consumption. These usually carry most items included in the food groups for your nourishment needs as well as cooking products. Many food markets nowadays are being built or transformed into natural and organic food markets in response to the demands for chemical-free food products. There are also several farmers markets sprouting in places near the countryside and even in some urban areas to give opportunities for local producers to sell their wares.

Food markets are havens for many homemakers, cooks and food connoisseurs. These are one-stop shops for most of the daily needs of individuals and families alike. Many, if not all, food markets have a wet and dry section for meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, canned goods, dairy & breakfast products, infant food, and bread, among several other groups. Food markets have been around since ancient times when humans first learned how to trade goods until the time that money was used to purchase food and other items. These are usually found in public areas where many of the town’s farmers, fishermen, and butchers meet to sell their products.

The food markets during ancient times and just before the Industrial Revolution sold natural and organic food. This was when fertilizers and other chemicals were not used to enhance and to hasten the growth of plants and even animals. Not until recent years that fertilizers were found to be harmful to health and to the environment. Since then natural and organic food markets began to be introduced back to the food industry.

 Aside from the natural and organic food markets, farmers markets are also highly encouraged to help local producers to sell their products. Many botanical parks, areas and associations are sponsoring farmers markets on a weekly or monthly basis to educate most people on the importance of patronizing local produce. Farmers markets also encourage other people to plant fruits and vegetables in their backyards and to raise poultry and cattle for their own consumption as well as a means to earn extra money.
