Nightclubs are a venue providing food, drink and dancing, generally during the evening hours. Nightclubs can be generally distinguished from bars, taverns, and the like by their inclusion of dance floors, with music played courtesy of a DJ. Recently, there has been a surge in the popularity of teen nightclubs, which cater to those who are under the age of 18. These clubs feature all the fun of traditional nightclubs, but with a curfew, and no alcohol!

In places where there is no regulation or restrictions, it is not uncommon for nightclubs to be open well into the early morning hours. There are several illegal after hours clubs that also exist as well, serving alcohol well past the legal time.

To keep from disturbing the peace, nightclubs are often built with thick, sound-insulated walls, and few or no windows. While nightclubs can be custom built, one popular option for establishing a nightclub is to convert old movie theatres, warehouses, and underground buildings into a particular nightclub establishment. This is cost effective, as these types of buildings already have many desirable features.
