At Your Service - Professional Services![]() Professional services are essentially any services rendered by a specialist in their field. Companies or individuals will hire them for a limited time when their expertise is needed. Specialists rendering these professional services are often consultants or contractors for whom these short-term contracts make up their livelihood. Because of the degree of specialization and expertise required and also due to the “feast or famine” nature of this work, most professional services don’t come cheap. Usually a company or individual who has decided to hire a professional consultant will do so looking for high quality work rather than cheap labor. Obviously different consultants and consulting firms will charge different amounts based on their own business philosophies, with less experienced consultants tending to charge less than their more experienced counterparts. Often those relatively new to a professional field will work with a consulting firm to gain that experience before moving on to independent work. Because of this consulting firms can often offer a lower rate than an independent contractor, but be warned: since consulting firms often have younger consultants, you may be getting what you paid for. Specific Professional Services There are many areas that are covered by the umbrella term “professional services,” many of whom may not call themselves consultants. If you have hired an accountant, for instance, their services to you are professional services. A business may hire an accountant as may an individual. Accountants often render longer-term professional services than other consultants since their work is often of an ongoing nature. Architects are usually brought in for individual projects and with their individual skill and expertise they are a perfect example of a professional consultant. Attorneys may not always be thought of as consultants, but the nature of their work is rendering professional services for individual cases. A stock broker is a professional consultant. Engineers also render professional services in several areas of engineering, including civil engineering (which deals with public works, infrastructures, and public buildings); electrical engineering; and mechanical engineering. Computer Consultants One of the fastest growing professional services is computer
consulting. Businesses and governments
have to deal with ever-changing technology, including new software, operating
systems, networking systems, and hardware that seems to improve every six months. While most businesses will not upgrade every
time something new comes out, when they do they often hire a computer
consultant to assist with installation and training of the new system. They may also hire a consultant to
troubleshoot problems with an existing system. Local Results for Business Consultants
