Need that package there today or first thing tomorrow?  Will the deal fall through if that report isn’t in another city, state, country, or continent ASAP?  Fear not!   Messenger services come to the rescue.  For messenger services, there are no too small or insurmountable taxes.

A messenger, also known as a courier, is a person or company that is contracted to deliver messages, packages documents, and other types of mail. Messenger service are distinguishable from standard mail services by the fact that they offer enhanced features such as speed, tracking, security, and signature services that can be individualized based on a person or company’s needs.  They can guarantee delivery by a specific time, as well, a feature that is optional and limited among most routine mail services.  Messenger services can be more expensive than the usual mail services, but the urgency of the product being delivered can more than warrant the cost.

Types of Messenger Services

Bike messengers riding messengers or motorcycles often work in large cities.  They provide interoffice delivery, be it next door or across town.  For larger distances or packages too bulky to be transported safely on a bike, messenger services operate vans or other vehicles. In order to ensure delivery over large distances, messenger services will also use trucks, trains and planes in any combination to ensure packages arrive on time.

The Messenger Services Industry in the United States

The courier industry is a prominent part of commerce in the United States commerce.  Throughout American History, instances in which messenger services played a vital role in the country are well documented, such as during westward expansion, and the gold rush.  Wells Fargo, for example, was founded in 1852 and quickly became known as the standard company for all package deliveries.  They specialized in shipping packages, gold, and newspapers, and held offices in ever Western camp and settlement.  Soon, the Pony Express was established to move packages even faster.  The industry continued to flourish and evolve as technology did, becoming what it is today.  Now, messenger services exist regionally, locally, and nationally.
