Motorcycle Accessories

If you have recently gotten a motorcycle, then congratulations!  Chances are, you can hardly wait to hit the open road on your new machine.  But before you take that first ride, you will want to make sure that you are properly equipped with the appropriate motorcycle accessories.

Possibly the most important part of motorcycling is safety.  Motorcycle accessories designed to protect you from harm are widely available.  Safety gear can be considered inconvenient, but it the one thing that that can offer your body protection from the road in an accident.  There are several items no motorcyclist should be without.

Helmets

One of the most quintessential types of motorcycle accessories is the helmet.  Helmets protect from head injuries that could potentially be fatal even at low speeds.  Still, they are optional in many states.  The best type of helmet is one that is approved and endorsed by the Department of Transportation.  Half helmets, while stylish, should be avoided, because they are not meant for functionality.  You should make sure that the helmet you purchase comes from a well known and reputable manufacturer.

Outerwear

There is a saying in biking that states that you should dress for the slide and not the ride.  Simply stated, if you have on the proper clothing when biking you can adequately protect yourself from various bumps, bruises and scrapes, not to mention a painful case of road rash.  Among your arsenal of motorcycle accessories should be high quality armored outerwear.  Manufacturers have many options available that are weatherproof and fit over clothing.  Leather jackets, jeans, and even full race suits can offer protection in high speed accidents.  Still many cyclists prefer more lightweight, aerodynamic gear.  Armor will provide an extra measure of protection against impacts.

Gloves and Boots

When falling, it is nature to extend you hands and arms.  Because of this, our hands can suffer a lot of damage when falling from a bank.  Gloves provide protection from this.  Well padded gloves will keep your palms, fingers and wrists from injury. Boots provide crash protection and additional stability on the road.  Boots allow you to better grip the motorcycle and stay mounted.  A good pair of motorcycle boots can take you a long way, and might even outlast your bike!
