First Steps: What are Your Needs?

One of the first things that motorcycle dealers are going to need to know is how you plan to use your bike.  Are you using it as a primary means of transportation or as a toy to play with on the weekends?  Will you be in heavy city traffic or out in the country?  Is there a particular style that best fits your body?  Are there particular features you want or need? 

Once motorcycle dealers collect this basic information, they can steer you in the direction of bikes best suited to you.  Likely you will be allowed to test out certain types of bikes, and get an idea for the feel of the bike on the road.   Motorcycles come highly customized nowadays, and likely your motorcycle dealer will be able to help you tweak the bike you choose. 

New or Used?

Most motorcycle dealers will have new bikes available, as well as a selection of used bikes.  Used bikes are great for novice riders.  An occasional scratch or dent is not bound to bother you, and if you incur damages, it is easier to take, since the used bike has already depreciated and isn’t in perfect shape, after all.  The one drawback with used bikes is that they might not be as reliable as new motorcycles, and can be costly in the long run.  Motorcycle dealers generally offer warranties with their new bikes, although it will cost you more money up front. 

Motorcycle dealers will work with you to find a bike within your budget as well.  Many motorcycle dealers offer in-house financing, and many of them have relationships with local banks as well.  When considering how much bike you can afford, also consider the cost of insurance and accessories.
